Most of you have probably seen this one coming. I talked about things I don’t like about Firefox OS yesterday, today it’s time to say what is so great about it.
It’s a phone based on web tech from Mozilla, that alone is quite awesome. A lot of people see the fact that the UI and apps are HTML5/JS based as a downside, and if this operating system was being made by any other company or foundation I would probably agree with those people, but you have to remember Mozilla is playing on their home turf here. They decided to stick to what they know and I think it’s going to bring great results in the future.
There is another benefit to using web technologies. It is hard for a mobile operating system to see wide adoption if there is no apps for it. It’s a circle where people don’t want to use an operating system with no apps and developers don’t want to create apps for an OS that is not being used by a lot of people. I think this is not going to be as much of a problem for Firefox OS as it will be for Ubuntu Touch or Sailfish OS. Because FFOS apps that are web based any website that has a mobile version already has a Firefox OS app, any web developer is now a mobile app dev. My prediction is that in the future we will see content management systems like WordPress or Drupal have a one wizard solution for creating a Firefox OS app. You just modify some variables and after a few minutes you will have a Firefox OS app that is ready for Marketplace.
Firefox OS is being developed quite fast for this type of project. FFOS 1.1 was ofically released on October 9th, and 1.2 is now in pre-release state and we will probably see an official announcement about it soon. If only ZTE would keep up.
Another great thing about it is the fact that it’s being developed for low end, inexpensive devices. This means people who will now be able to browse the web and stay connected with others through social media. Those things play significant role in shaping the future of many countries where currently it isn’t easy to afford a PC or a higher end smart phone. I think that Firefox OS will play an important role in some socio-political events in the future.
In five or six years your Samsing Galaxy S4 and HTC One will be considered slow and outdated. There are plenty of Linux distributions geared towards older hardware but there is nothing for mobile space. Well now there is Firefox OS. Since it’s geared for low end hardware you know it will run well, you will get new updates and not have to worry about not being able to run new apps.
